主讲人:杨扬教授
                北卡罗来纳大学教堂山分校

                上海东方特聘教授
时间:2015年7月7日 周二10:00 - 11:30
地点:校本部B417
讲座内容:
Social and medical research on health disparities has blossomed in recent years. A wide variety of health risk factors and outcomes have been studied across many diverse subgroups in the society. While present research is impressive in both scope and depth, there are some basic problems that remain to be addressed. The separate bodies of knowledge by disciplines also prevent us from understanding the key interactions that are likely essential for explaining disparities in health and longevity. My research intends to address these deficiencies by focusing on basic problems, developing new analytic tools for solving these problems, and mostly importantly, constructing an integrative framework for understanding social and biological mechanisms producing health disparities.
This lecture gives a summary of my recent and ongoing methodological and substantive studies along these lines. I focus on three research questions:
1) What do age-period-cohort analyses tell us about disease etiology, social change, and trends and patterns of health disparities?
2) Why do women live longer than men?
3) Why does social isolation kill? Examples given for each question show how recent advances in the social and behavior sciences, genetics, medicine and biology can be combined in research efforts that hold the promise to transform all these disciplines and to advance our understanding of the processes that lead to long life, good health, and optimum social and physical functioning.
