约瑟夫·马奎尔教授是体育学科全球排名第一的拉夫堡大学教授,也是过去50年欧洲和北美体育社会学最重要的体育社会学家。他的研究领域为体育、文化和社会,包括体育暴力、运动损伤、运动和身体/情感、体育和媒体等,当前关注体育和社会理论、体育和全球化。他曾任两届国际体育社会学会主席。其荣誉还包括：The International Sociology of Sport Association ISSA Honorary Member's Award (2011).The North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) The Distinguished Service Award ( 2010).
