This lecture looks at the bar –a loan word from English – in Tokyo and Shanghai, two of Asia’s preeminent global cities. The talk focuses on the late twentieth-century development of the bar in East Asia, its changing image, social functions, and place in urban life. Themes include gender, cosmopolitanism, rising income disparities, urban renewal, and gentrification.
